SDHGPA Update
Dear SDHGPA member,
This update is provided to alert you about upcoming events in the flying community.
Laguna Camp-N-Fly - August 28-30
The annual Laguna Camp-N-Fly flyin will be held Saturday August 29th. The SDHGPA has reserved a group campsite at the Whitethorn Group Campground for Friday and Saturday nights, (28th and 29th). Check in time is 2pm on Friday and check-out time is 2pm on Sunday (30th). Rumor has it that Danielle Kinch has offered to shuttle drive/shuttle pilots. Thanks Danielle!!!
For more more information about the Whitehorn campsite, please visit:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/cleveland/recreation/camping/whitethorn.shtml
Special Note: Laguna is listed as a "sensitive site." All flyers must land only in the club LZ if an XC opportunity is not available. SDHGPA membership is required for this site. Temporary membership forms are available on the web site or at launch. PG pilots, please make sure weather conditions are suitable for your experience level and piloting skill.
If you have any questions contact Bill Helliwell.
2009 Kick Gas Festival- October 24th
The SDHGPA and the Torrey Pines Gliderport have joined forces to promote the Sports of Hang Gliding and Paragliding with a booth at the 2009 Kick Gas Festival at Qualcomm Stadium. (http://www.kickgasfestival.com/) We encourage all So Cal instructors to provide information about their services for the event as I am sure many people will be interested in learning more about the sports.
We need volunteers to work the booth. If you are interested, please contact Danielle Kinch for more information.
Santa Cruz Flats Race - September 20-26th
Hi Pilots,
I would like to invite San Diego area pilots to come out to the Santa Cruz Flats Race in Casa Grande, Arizona, September 20-26th. This is a USHPA and CIVL sanctioned race to goal format competition. It is a great competition and we've had a wonderful time there the past two years staying at the hotel, sitting by the pool, getting pulled up next to the golf course, and flying in smooth air conditions over the Arizona flatlands.
If you would be so kind as you keep this in mind and encourage any local pilots that you know who would enjoy coming to this competition.
If you have any questions, please contact me. I'm producing articles on the upcoming competition in the Oz Report and there are many article about our previous experiences there here:

Palomar
This summer Palomar has provided consistent XC opportunities. Many PG flights have resulted in 10+ mile XC flights. If you find your self 800-1000 over launch, give the XC route a try. You can view some of these XC flights on Leonardo.
This site also had a recent injury accident. Please be careful on approach to the "primary" LZ below launch. This is a cramped, thermic LZ subject to rotor. With a mere 1000 feet over launch, the large and inviting fields near the 76 (above Harrah's casino) are within unassisted glide.
Laguna Update
One of the LZs along the Laguna XC route is near the conservation camp (low-security prison). It is on Vista water district property leased by the Navy. This LZ is approximately 3.5 NW of Warner Springs. They have said it is OK if we land there, but ask that we do NOT fly over the prison grounds or over the trees in the area. Please set up to land over open fields.
Big Black
Last month we had a work party to clear the LZ. Special thanks to the 11 pilots and guests showed up to help clear brush and maintain the Launch and LZ. The forrest service is in the process of adding a new combination lock to the upper gate. I will alert everyone when it has been installed.
Little Black
Summer, with high pressure days, yield very turbulent conditions. There was a recent injury accident at this site, but it has gone unreported. If you know any details about this incident please contact Roger Marsh, SDHGPA safety director, or another member of the board.
Suggestions and comments appreciated. Thank you for your continued support.

April Update #2
Dear SDHGPA member,
This update is provided to alert you about upcoming events in the flying community.
BLOSSOM - SITE UPDATE - IMPORTANT ADVISORY
The forrest service still has not issued a permit for Sunrise Powerlink. Which means you can still help by writing letters! We need to get the folks out and active to help prevent the ruination of the Blossom/El Cap flying site by the incipient 250 foot high tension lines. Selected members of the club are working with the save El Monte Park effort to determine what our donations will be used for prior to approval.
For more information about how you can help, please visit: http://saveelmontevalley.com/take-action
LAGUNA - SITE UPDATE - IMPORTANT ADVISORY
Bill Helliwell and I received a phone call from the land owner that owns the land that encompasses lands around the club LZ and "The Wash" near the base of granite mounting.
Due to people allegedly cutting fences, littering and generally trespassing, the land owner has informed us that they will be aggressively prosecuting trespassers for being on their land.
LANDING AT THE WASH IS PROHIBITED - If you land anywhere in the valley other than the club LZ, you will be prosecuted for trespassing regardless of the circumstances.
If you are unable to make the LZ, DO NOT FLY THIS SITE. In addition, this site requires SDHGPA membership as per the Anza Borrego Permit. Please self regulate flight operations at Laguna to maintain our ability to keep this valuable site.
April 11th "TailGate" Fly-in
The April Tailgate fly-in is Saturday April 11 (two days!) at Mt. Palomar (Nate Harrison Grade). If the front lasts too long, we'll shift to Sunday - watch Twitter and the new Forum for updates. The last fly-in, organized by Danielle, was a smashing success. 25 pilots flew at Blossom, and SDHGPA members picked up as much trash as they could and generally beautified the area.
Please consult the SDHGPA website for the latest updates.
Torrey Pines Soaring Council
The BOD voted 5-0 (one abstention) in favor of donating $500 for seed money to support the Torrey Pines Soaring Council's effort to make a "Gary Fogel's History of Soaring at Torrey Pines" video for use in both public outreach and political (preservation) efforts. We will ask Jim Wright for the appropriate person to receive these funds.
If anyone can recommend an entity that might provide matching funds for our current efforts to fund the webcam at Torrey ($400), to support the El Monte Park preservation (save Blossom) fund (proposed $500), and the History of Soaring video project ($500), please let me know.
Suggestions and comments appreciated. Thank you for your continued support.

March Update #2
SDHGPA Update
Dear SDHGPA member,
This update is provided to alert you about upcoming events in the flying community.
Site Updates
Palomar - Palomar has had some great soaring conditions over the past few weeks. On March 7, 5 pilots PG pilots submitted XC flights to the leonardo database. You can view Steve Rohrbaugh's flight here: http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/165841
This site is shaping up to be a major XC starting point. With a private airstrip available for HG landings, We hope to see more HG flights at this site. Hang Pilots can call Bill Helliwell as well as a few other HG's that have flown there for details regarding the HG LZ. For new pilots (HG and PG) to the site, you may contact Charlie Jancic as he has been appointed the Pilot in Command for this site. Many other pilots fly this site too, please get a site briefing prior to flying for the first time.
Big Black - When Horse goes North, Big Black may be your alternative site to fly. Summer is coming and the days are getting longer. After the last county fire, no one has really explored the potential of Big Black with no trees. This is on my list of sites to explore and fly for the 2009 season. If you are interested in joining in, please let me know. **Please note that there are restrictions for flying this site. Please consult the SDHGPA website for the details.
Tecate Peak - As Dave M. was the first one off, he was appointed Pilot in command for this ancient HG site. Rumors hold that HG pilots flew Tecate Peak 15-20 years ago. A few PG pilots last October, hucked off in search of a new East facing site. Tecate Peak may the place to go on those east days when you dont feel like Laguna. Contact Dave for more information. You can view a flight and photos of the area here:
http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/145307
Little Black - Little Black has been great flying for the past 2 weeks. Its getting a little rowdy around noon, but later in the day has been nice. Yesterday, I flew my first Tandem passenger there and had a great 40 minute flight (though hiking all that gear up is a challenge). Mike launched at 2:30 and flew till 5:30ish and Regina had the hill all to herself in the late afternoon. Come check out Little Black!!! Pleas review the airspace restrictions on the club website and a sectional to familiarize yourself with the area. View Josh G's XC flight from Feb 14th here: http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/161188

Blossom Valley Report
If you haven't heard, the Sunrise Powerlink is destined to be placed directly in the path to El Cap. This will cause a significant risk to flying in the area. Please spend some of your morning coffee time, writing emails, letters and keeping up-to-date on issues for this site. It only takes 10 minutes out of your day...

Reserve Repack
Repack clinic is still on hold for lack of a proper space. What used to cost us a few hundred bucks now costs us a few thousand. So please please please help us find a new spot! We need at least 25 foot ceilings, heavy rafters or beams near the middle from which to swing, and at least 50 feet of swinging room (think basketball courts, climbing gyms, any other kind of gym... etc.) Please call Roger Marsh with any ideas or contacts.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
March Calendar - Tailgate Fly-in
The first "Tailgate Fly-in" will be Saturday March 21st at Blossom Valley. The SDHGPA will provide some food and beverages for members.
Note: Each site has an USHPA rating recommendation, please fly responsibly.
For the SDHGPA calendar of events, please view the SDHGPA calendar link.

Soaring Council - Update
Jim Wright met with soaring council members and some people who recently produced a wonderful historical film about hang gliding. They have decided to pursue production of a film version of Gary Fogel's incredible story of the history of soaring and free flight in San Diego, for use as both a (longer) documentary for those directly interested in the subject and a (shorter) brief history for the public to learn about our sport. The products would be given away (or sold at cost) for purposes of promoting both free flight and the preservation of San Diego's amazing, unique, AND historically important flying sites. Jim and crew will need to collect donations to support this ambitious effort, and the club appeals to YOU to donate to this very valuable effort directly. Gary's knowledge of free flight history, San Diego's key role in that history, and his specific knowledge of the historical value of the Torrey Pines flying site are exhaustive (though not exhausting), and his storytelling is vivid, visual, and very compelling. We cannot rely on him as the sole vehicle for propagating his very relevant history of unpowered flight in San Diego - if we had a well-produced film version of his history we could readily share it much more widely. Jim has also asked the club to donate $500, and we will consider this request as soon as they generate a specific financial proposal. If you would like to volunteer your time to this project, please contact Jim Wright.

Repack Clinic***** POSTPONED *****
The SDHGPA repack clinic is postponed until further notice. In the past, Patrick Henry High School offered us a classroom, cafeteria and gym space for a small rental fee to cover the overtime cost of custodial services. Patrick Henry no longer has the capacity to allow us to use that location for the clinic.
Out of the ~15 locations we attempted to hold the clinic, several did not have the proper gym ceiling to conduct the reserve deployment simulator or were unavailable. The 2 locations that were available charged a rental rate of over $1500 which exceeds the budget the club has for this kind of operation.
We are in the process of rescheduling this event. As a guideline, reserves are recommended to be repacked at least once a year. If you are overdue, please seek alternative sources to have your reserve chute inspected and repacked.
If anyone can recommend a suitable of a location, please contact Roger Marsh @ (949) 795-9849
Suggestions and comments appreciated. Thank you for your continued support.
Best regards,
Bret Daniel

Blossom Valley Action Item - TODAY FEB 25th
Dear SDHGPA member,
This update is provided to alert you about upcoming events in the flying community.
Blossom Valley Action Item - TODAY FEB 25th
SDG&E representatives will hold an open house from 5 to 8 pm Feb. 25 TODAY at the Lakeside Community Center, (9841 Vine Street, Lakeside, CA) to answer questions from the public.
As many pilots as possible to come and meet with the residents and Planning Group members. Since this is an open house style meeting you can come any time and stay only as long as you want. There will be media and petitions to sign and both Blossom and El Monte Valley residents to meet and interact with.
New pilots and old still feel a great flight has been made when they can say "Made it to El Cap". If you have never made that crossing, I must tell you it is a fabulous experience, especially when you are able to fly back to launch.
The proposed power lines will cause a major obstruction that will make the El Cap crossing extremely dangerous.
What you can do to help.
During your morning coffee or tea, take some time to write a letter to the CPUC explaining why you like to fly there and how this obstruction will greatly restrict your recreational activities in this area.
1. Review this thread: http://www.paraglidingforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=22812
2. You can file a formal complain here ->http://ia.cpuc.ca.gov/cimsapp/
3. Attend the meeting
The time is now, and everyone needs to pull together to save this site.
Suggestions and comments appreciated. Thank you for your continued support.
Best regards,
Bret Daniel

February Update
This update is provided to alert you about upcoming events in the flying community.
Site Updates
In conjunction with USHPA, the SDHGPA will be providing more detailed information about the sites we monitor and fly. To maintain the USHPA insurance for 3rd parties for the San Diego sites, it is important that all pilots have a current USHPA membership. A non-USHPA pilot having an incident can jeopardize the site for all. Some sites require SDHGPA + USHPA membership due to the permits that were negotiated in the past. Please abide by each site's rules and regulations so that we all can enjoy our sport.
The following list provides the current requirements and will be updated on the SDHGPA website in the near future.
Horse - (SDHGPA preferred) The SDHGPA (with the help of Lyne Perry) coordinates grading efforts of the road to the top of horse, your membership dues and donations support this effort. The SDHGPA members also maintain the windsock at this site.
Laguna - (mandatory SDHGPA + USHPA) The SDHGPA owns an LZ in the valley that not attainable on glide. This site requires that all pilots posess a current year membership card or a temporary membership card when flying this site. Landing rights were negotiated with the land owner in the valley such that the "Wash" is available for landing. Failure to produce a current SDHGPA membership card may result in a situation for trespassing. The surrounding areas and Launch are provided via a special use permit that requires SDHGPA and USHPA membership. Laguna is listed as a sensitive site with USHPA and the GPS coordinates will not be published for this site. A copy of the Permit will be available soon on the website.
Otay - no requirement (SDHGPA preferred)
Fuzz - (SDHGPA preferred)
Blossom - (SDHGPA preferred, verbal agreement with land owner was made to land at the RaceTrack for SDHGPA members) Landing at El Monte Park is prohibited for all pilots to land.
Big Black - (SDHGPA preferred) The SDHGPA has a special use permit with the forrest service as the custodian of flight operations and use of the forest lands. Non-SDHGPA pilots should fly with a SDHGPA member at this site to ensure they are provided with a site briefing. This site has special requirements listed on the SDHGPA website. The SDHGPA suite director MUST be informed of all flight activity.
Little Black- no requirement (SDHGPA preferred)
Palomar - no requirement (SDHGPA preferred)
Torrey - mandatory USHPA
Tecate Peak - no requirement
SDHGPA is listed as preferred on many sites due to the fact that the SDHGPA issues over $1500/year to USHPA for 3rd party insurance or has special agreements in place for flight operations.

US Hang Gliding and US Paragliding National Teams
The SDHGPA is supporting the US National Hang Gliding and Paragliding teams with a $100 donation to each Team. Glen Volk, SDHGPA member, is on the HG team and had an epic flight of 200+ miles in Texas last year. Congratulations!

Torrey Pines Soaring Council - Flight Park Educational DVD - Action Item
Gary Fogel has created a fascinating, interesting, and very informative Power-Point presentation on the history of soaring at Torrey Pines. The time spans from John J. Montgomery's first glider flight from a hill near Imperial Beach in 1883 to present day flying at the Torrey Pines flight Park. Included are stories about aircraft innovations, famous men and women pilots, educational programs with City Schools, all of which took place at the Flight Park. It is a very visual presentation of what Torrey Pines has been and could be (should be) going into the future. A natural idea evolved to format Gary's presentation into a DVD so it could be easily presented to a board audience. This educational material could help foster support for the preservation of the Torrey Pines Flight Park.
We need help. Anyone with the time, interest, and any video production experience please contact Jim Wright at jmwright402@sbcglobal.net. The 1st available time to meet with Gary will be a lunch meeting on March 11 in the UTC area. Jim would like to have three to five people who would be active contributors meet with Gary to plan where we are going and next steps.
Please feel free to contact Jim if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions.

Torrey Pines Soaring Council
The Torrey Pines Soaring Council (TPSC) is working hard to assist the Gliderport in maintaining the ability to fly RC, HG, PG and sailplane aircraft at the Torrey Pines Gliderport by working with UCSD, the city of San Diego and other government agencies. The SDHGPA and USHPA were invited to have a seat on the Soaring council to provide representating for HG and PG pilots who wish to voice concerns or suggestions regarding the gliderport. The BOD voted no in support of endorsing the Torrey Hawks to having a seat on the TPSC. It has been confirmed by the SDHGPA rep, USHPA rep and the Chairman of the Soaring Council that there is sufficient representation for our sport (HG and PG) on the Soaring Council and there is no void to be filled at this time.
The SDHGPA BOD voted to table discussions regarding the Hawks endorsement and will table discussions regarding this issue until the TPSC determines the discussion is warranted.
In the best interest of the sport (HG and PG), the SDHGPA will entertain USHPA, NON-USHPA and SDHGPA written requests to be forwarded to the TPSC for consideration. To reiterate, the SDHGPA representaive (Jim Wright) will continue to make decisions in the best interest of the SDHGPA and the general flying community to the best of hius capcacity in which he was appointed.
The SDHGPA supports the TPSC and the Gliderport as the conduit in which to interface with State Parks, the City or San Diego, UCSD and all other entities regarding the operations, issues, restrictions, etc. and respectfully asks that all pilots wishing to participate in contributing thier opionions or suggestions, utilize and support these bodies in the best intrest of support for the flying community.
